“ In the Nights themselves, tales divert, cure, redeem, and save lives.” (xii, Haddawy)
The tales, heal, rescue, liberate and change the course of lives
The Nights, like the champions of its stories, have the ability to save those who need saving.
The stories affect lives, whether it be in saving or restoring lives the lives of those in the stories or outside of them.
“… of all the work I’d done in school, only a fraction was meaningful work.” (2, Waters)
There was only a small part of the work that I did in school that was worth keeping.
Throughout my educational career, there was only a small amount of work that my mother deemed worth holding on to.
My mother only saved the work that she thought was meaningful, which wasn’t much when compared to the sum total of what I’d done over the 12 years of my schooling.
I don’t think that my paraphrasing truly affected my understanding of these texts in the same way that it did when we did this activity in class. Similar to my paraphrasing, the Haddawy excerpt was more difficult to do because of the style of writing. When comparing Haddawy to Waters, paraphrasing Waters’ work was much easier. Her writing style is closer to my own than Haddawy; meaning that I was able to insert myself into the position of the writer editing their work versus an outsider who had to break down the syntax and then rebuild it.
